What does it mean to work hard a s a physician?
Seth Godin would say, "doing the work that has risk." Reasonable, risk.
Not sure if this is the definition that I would use as an MD. I'm partial to a simple idea.
Showing up with presence and compassion is the hard work in medicine.
When you are on your 8th admission? This patient is having the worst day of her life.
When you want to be home, at dinner, with your family? This patient's suffering is larger than the whole world.
Rule #2:
Hard work is presence and compassion, with every patient, with every colleague, every day.
